The draws for the final stages of Europe’s two premier football cup competitions, the Champions’ League and Europa League, have taken place at UEFA headquarters in Nyons, Switzerland.
In the Champions’ league one of the game’s oldest rivalries was given a fresh twist as Juventus drew the holders Real Madrid again, and the Italians would love revenge for being on the receiving end of some Spanish setbacks in recent attempts to capture Europe’s top club trophy.
Another Spanish giant Barcelona also takes on Italian opposition, with Roma the opponents in this tie, in which Barcelona are hot favourites. Indeed many believe Barcalona will lift the trophy this year.
The two remaining English clubs, Liverpool and Manchester City, have drawn each other.
In the Europa league the lesser lights are bidding to win and, like Manchester United last year, earn a champions’ league spot.
This is how Arsenal, notably, could salvage an otherwise wrecked season, and they will have home advantage for the second deciding leg against CSKA Moscow.
Marseille will carry French hopes, while Atletico Madrid are the favourites against Sporting with many tipping them to go all the way to the title.
